BIOLOGICAL: localisation of brain function Flashcards
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
Problem solving, decision making and motor skills.
What is the parietal lobe responsible for?
Sensory processes such as pain, touch and ability to feel temperature.
What is the occipital lobe responsible for?
Interpreting visual stimuli and information such as identifying colours and recognising words.
What happened to Phineas Gage?
A metal pole was sent through his skull, damaging a large section of his left frontal lobe.
What changes were observed in Phineas?
He became more aggressive and impulsive, and had deficits in his rational decision making.
What stayed the same for Phineas?
His intellectual capacities.
When did the incident happen to Phineas?
1848.
What happened to Clive Wearing?
He contracted a variation of herpes that spread to his brain and caused damage to his hippocampus, as well as his temporal and frontal lobes.
What changes were observed in Clive Wearing?
Serious case of anterograde amnesia. Unable to make and store new memories, short term memory of under 30 seconds. Retains memories from before illness, such as having children but doesn’t remember their names or faces.
What stayed the same for Clive Wearing?
His intellectual capacity and ability to play piano, read music and conduct a choir.
What does Clive wearing tell us about the brain?
That the hippocampus is important in the processing and storage of declarative memories.
