Biological Evolution And Classification (2) Flashcards
Kingdom
Second highest level of classification; includes animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
Phylogeny
An organisms evolutionary history that indicates how a species “branched” off from other species and genetically distinguished itself.
Species
The most specific level of classification that defines an individual organism.
Homology
The study of anatomical, molecular, or developmental similarities between organisms.
Hierarchy
A classification technique that is based starts with a high level of generalization that increases in specificity and definition.
Biogeography
Geographic distribution of organisms; species living in the same region are more likely to be closely related.
Natural Selection
Process by which organisms with a certain set of favorable traits survive and reproduce other individuals with the same set of traits.
Domains
The most generalized level of biological classification; includes archae, bacteria, and eukarya.
Taxonomy
The study of classification of organisms; enables scientist to use a common system of classifying organisms.
Autotroph
An organism that creates its own food, usually through photosynthesis.
Heterotroph
An organism that must get its energy from consuming other organisms.
