Biological Diversity Flashcards
Species
living things of the same kind that are able to reproduce successfully
Biological Diversity
The diversity of species and species and ecosystem on Earth and the ecological processes of which they are part of ecosystem, community, and the genetic diversity.
Ecosystem
Particular environment where all kinds of living thing interact, even with non-living things
Population
Group of individuals of the same species living in an area
Community
A group of populations of different species
Symbiosis
Relation between 2 different species
Commensalism
Relation between species where one is benefited and the other isn’t, but isn’t harmed
Mutualism
Relation between species in which both are being benefited
Parasitism
Relation between species in which one is benefited and other is harmed
Interspecies competion
2 or more species using the same limited resources
Niche
Role of a species in a ecosystem
Resources partitioning
Phenomenon in which 2 or more species compete for same resources dividing out resources
Variability
Variation within a species
Natural selection
Environment Process where the environment “selects” which individual will survive and reproduce
Heritable characteristic
Characteristics that are transmitted from generation to generation
Non-heritable characteristics
Characteristics caused by environment
Discrete variation
Variation in a heritable characteristic that has an either/or form
Continuous variation
Variation in a heritable characteristics that falls within range
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction without fusion of sex cells, resulting identical offspring and parent.
Binary fission
Type of asexual reproduction in amoebas and other organism in which a parent cell divides exactly into 2 identical cells.
Budding
Type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud on parent
Spores
Cell produced by asexual reproduction in certain organisms which can directly develop into an adult
Vegetative reproduction
When a plant reproduces without a seed
Sexual reproduction
Exchange of genetics between 2 individuals resulting in offspring
