Q

What does the evolutionary theory propose?

A

Proposes that relationships form with individuals who posses certain traits. Traits that enhance successful reproduction are naturally selected.

Q

Males and female experience different selective pressures. How so?

A

Males do well to mate as frequently as possible and select women who are more fertile and healthy- smooth skin, glossy hair, red lips and a small waist are all indicators of youthfulness and healthiness.

Females also seek signs of fertility and healthiness in their partner, but are more concerned in finding a partner that can provide the resources needed for offspring to survive (e.g. food, shelter).

Q

What is the parental investment theory and who proposed it?

A

Proposed by Trivers in 1972, the theory offers further explanation about why certain relationships form, for example between younger women and older men.

According to the theory, as female mammals invest more in their offspring (e.g. they carry their baby), they must be “choosier” in finding a partner, hence will seek out to the male that can provide the most resources.

Q

What has dopamine been associated with and how does this link to forming a relationship?

A

Reward driven and pleasure seeking behaviour, so setting the goal of finding a partner, and being driven to achieve this will give us a ‘hit’ of dopamine. Forming relationships therefore give humans a ‘natural high’.
