Biological Approach Flashcards
What is main assumption of the biological approach ?
Is that our thinking and behaviour are strongly determined by biological factors : structure and functioning of the nervous system . This is in turn influenced by genetic and evolutionary factors.
What is heredity ?
Passing of characteristics from one generation to the next via genes..
What are the influence of genes for each person ?
Each individual possess a unique combination of genetic instructions meaning we differ in terms of personality , intelligence abilities.
How do we know how genetic factors determined ?
Through the use of twin studies by comparing concordance rates.
What are concordance rates ?
(The presence of the same rate in both members of a pair of twins )
What are the concordance rates of twins ?
Monozygotic twins (identical) have the same genetic material and dizygotic twins share 50%
What is a genotype ?
Is the genetic code that is written in the DNA.
What is a phenotype ?
The physical representation that results from the individuals genotype.
What is meant by natural selection ?
that genetically determined characteristics or behavior that enhance our chances of survival and reproduction would be passed on to the next generation and become more common in a population, whereas traits that do not enhance survival will gradually disappear.
Who proposed the theory of natural selection ?
Charles Darwin
