biological approach Flashcards
what is comprised of the CNS
brain and spinal cord
what does the brain and spinal cord do
controls behaviour
monitors psychological processes
recieves information from the sensory receptors
sends info into the muscles and gland
spinal cord relays info from the brain to rest of body is through spinal nerves
parts of the brain
parental lobe
frontal lobe
temporal lobe
brain stem
cerebellukn
occipital
what does the frontal lobe do
thinking memory behaviour and movement
the parietal lobe
language and touch
what does the cerebellum do
balance and coordination
what is the function of occipital lobe used for
sight
what does peripheral nervous system do
communicates via nerve impulses to and from CNS and the rest of the body
what does the somatic nervous system do
sends sensory neurons travel TO CNS
Motor neurons travel FROM CNS
Reflexes
what does the automatic nervous system do
Automatic functions
controls the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
what does the sympathetic nervous system do
stimulate release of hormones and neurotransmitters which have stimulating effects
what do parasympathetic nervous systems do
releases hormones and neurotransmitters which have inhibitory effects (calms the body)
what are neurontransmitters
when nerve impulses reaches the end of one neuron a chemical a neurotransmitter is released
and it travels from one neuron to the next across a function called the synapse
what types of neurotransmitters
some triggers the receiving neuron to send an impulse and some stop it from doing so
those trigger nerve impulses in the receiving neuron and stimulate the brain into action called excitatory neurotransmitters
these that slow down nerve impulses in order to calm the brain and balance mood called inhibitory transmitters
what is the endocrine system
is a network of glands throughout the body that manufacture and secrete hormones into the bloodstream
