Biological approach Flashcards
influences of genes on behaviour:
-it is u likely that one gene is responsible for any given behaviour, it’s more likely to be caused by a combination of lots of different genes
-environmental factors have a bigger impact on behaviour than they do on physical traits
MZ vs DZ twins environment:
-both MZ and DZ twins share some, but not all of their environment
genetic contribution:
-genetic contribution contributes to a trait of concordance for MZ twins is bigger than the concordance rate for DZ twins
-the bigger the difference in concordance rates, the more influence genetic variations has on the trait
twin studies assumption
-in twin studies we assume that MZ and DZ twins have a shared environment, this means that any difference in phenotype is because of a difference in genotype
-as a result, the bigger the difference in concordance rates between MZ and DZ twins, the more influence genetic variations has on the trait
DNA mutations:
-if a new allele makes an organism more likely to survive, the organism is more likely to pass on that allele to future generations
natural selection:
-is when traits which increase the chance of survival are passed onto future generations
influence of evolution on behaviour:
-according to the biological approach, natural selection shapes our behaviour because natural selection causes us to have certain genes, our genes then control processes in the brain and the brain causes our behaviour
cognitive neuroscience:
-is the study of which parts of the brain are involved in different mental processes
-2 methods used in cognitive neuroscience to detect activity in the brain are FMRI scan and EEG
