Bioinformatics Flashcards
Definition of orthologs
Preform identical or very similar functions in different species/separated by even of speciation
Conservative vs nonconservative vs invarient
Conservative- tolerant for change because of similarities (+)
Nonconservative - Hypervariable (-)
Invariant - mutations are intolerable and wont see a change. Has resistants to change despite evolution
Define paralogs
Preform different functions with in on species. Separated by event of genetic duplication.
Define Homologs
A gene related to a second by descent from common ancestor. Can be orthologs or paralogs
What is shuffling?
assessing the significance of our sliding alignment by “shuffling,” or randomly rearranging, one of the sequences. If alignment score is greater than the shuffling it strongly suggests similarity
