Bioinformatics Flashcards
Why is it easier to know when the full genome is assembled in prokaryotes than in eukaryotes?
Prokaryotic chromosomes are circular, and the whole genome is overall smaller.
What is annotation?
Determining the gene’s locations and functions in a genome.
What are some common applications of bioinformatics?
Assembly of genomes: either de novo assembly or from resequencing and aligning it with a reference genome. Assembly of genomes from many short reads, can also be combined with long-read methods.
Annotation: determining the location and functions of genes. BLAST can be used to look for conserved domains and to predict functions based on databases.
Phylogeny: aligning sequenced genomes to each other and finding conserved sequences - determine phylogenic structures through statistical methods.
What is bioinformatics?
A method to make biological predictions from large datasets of genomic information. Both biology, statistics and computer science are parts of this.
What are the main differences between the databases RefSeq and GenBank?
RefSeq: database of high quality and curated genomes. Also annotated.
GenBank: larger database with larger amounts of data, but often less curated and less trustworthy.
