Biogeochemical Cycles Flashcards
What is the backbone of life on Earth?
Carbon
What does no carbon mean in regards to life?
No carbon=No life
What does reactions of the carbon cycle mean?
Transformation of energy.
What are the 3 reactions of the carbon cycle?
- Photosynthesis
- Respiration + plants at night
- Combustion
What is synthesis?
Making something new.
What happens with photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight are needed for photosynthesis to happen. It will then produce sugar and oxygen.
What’s the formula for photosynthesis?
6CO2+6H2O->C6H12O6+6O2
What happens with respiration?
When we consume glucose and oxygen, we exert carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
What’s the formula for respiration?
C6H12O6+6O2->6CO2+6H2O+ATP(energy)
What is combustion?
Burning something while using oxygen.
What does combustion form/produce?
It forms an oxide and produces heat.
Name 3 sources of combustion,
- Volcanoes
- Forest fires
- Factories
Why are factories bad when it comes to a source of combustion?
Because it’s non natural which causes imbalance.
What increases global warming?
More carbon in the atmosphere.
