Biogeochemical Cycle Flashcards
What is essential to life on earth
Carbon
What are the three reactions of the carbon cycle?
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Combustion
Does the carbon cycle consist of chemical or physical changes?
chemical
what happens when you put more carbon into the atmostphere?
global warming
how does the greenhouse effect work?
1) sun heats the earth
2) Earth radiates heat
3) Some heat escapes atmosphere, some is trapped by greenhouse gases
How does the phosphorus cycle work?
1) Erosion
2) Absorbtion
3) Decomposition
4) Proliferation (growth or algea, ect in water) Also form rocks
How does Eutrophication work ?
1) Fertilizers and soaps and detergents go into environment
2) Form green algea in water
3) less oxygen for other life in water
4) fish die and sink to the bottom
5) their corpses form excessive sediment, ruins recreation
formally define eutrophication
the enrichment of a waterbody with nutrients, resulting in excessive growth of algae and depletion of dissolved oxygen via decomposition
what does decomposition use and put out?
they need a lot of O2 and release CO2
