biogeochemical cycle Flashcards
What is biogeochemical cycle
The process through which chemical substance or nutrient cycles the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem
What is water cycle
Water is one of the most important molecule in order for life to exist. It has no beginning or and end
occurs when the sun heats liquid water molecules and transfers enough
energy for them to escape into the atmosphere.
Evaporation
can occur if heat from the sun is able to change ice and snow directly to
water vapor.
Sublimation
release of
water from plants as vapors
through leaf pores called
stomata.
Transpiration
a l s o
sometimes known as “cloudformation process”. When
air cools down, the water
vapor condenses back to
water droplets and collect
together to form clouds.
Condensation
A stage that
m a y o c c u r a f t e r
condensation. When water
droplets get too big and
heavy they fall to ground as rain.
Precipitation
occurs when there is more water than the land/soil can absorb; excess
liquid flows across the surface of the land and into nearby bodies water.
Surface runoff
flow of water from above ground into subsurface; movement of water to
the ground
Infiltration
the downward movement of water into semipermeable rocks down to the
bedrocks.
Percolation
What is carbon cycle?
Serves as the backbone of organic matter. 0.036%
What is nitrogen cycle?
78%
What is phosphorus cycle?
Main source of phosphorus are the phosphate
What is sulfur cycle?
Sulfur is an important component of proteins and various protein-carbohydrate
complexes. Found primarily in the soil
main form of sulfur that can be
utilized by plants and is eventually returned back into the soil through decomposition
process.
