Biogenetics' part 1 Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
When plants make use of the sun’s energy to make food (glucose)
Process of photosynthesis
Plant manufactures glucose from carbon dioxide.
Water using energy transferred from the environment to the chloroplast by light
What reaction is photosynthesis?
endothermic
Word equation photosynthesis
carbon dioxide +water arrow light glucose + oxygen
symbol equation photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O arrow light C6H12O6 + 6O2
Molecule for each
Carbon dioxide=CO2
Water=H2O
Oxygen=O2
Glucose=C6H12O6
What is limiting factor?
Is something that restricts or slows down the biological process
what is the possible limiting factors for photosynthesis?
Light intensity
temperature
chlorophyll
How does temperature affects photosynthesis?
when temperature is used speeds up the chemical reaction.
What happens if the temperature rises too much?
Enzymes will denatured and the rate of reaction will decrease
How does the amount of light effect photosynthesis?
If there is more light the plant will grow
If not then it won’t grow as tall and slows the rate of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis required practical
- Fill a boiling tube with 0.2% sodium
hydrogen carbonate solution. - Freshly cut a 10 cm piece of pondweed and
place it in the boiling tube with the cut end
at the top. - Set up an LED lamp at a distance of 10 cm to
the boiling tube and leave to settle for 5
minutes. - Start the stopwatch and count the number of
bubbles released in one minute. - Repeat twice and calculate the mean number
of bubbles. - Repeat steps 1-6, altering distance of the
lamp so it is 30 cm, 40 cm and 50cm away
from the boiling tube.
What is the inverse square law?
If you double the distance between the plan and the light source you quarter the light intensity
Where is the energy transferred from the environment?
Chlorophyll
How do farmers control conditions of plants inside greenhouses?
Heating
Artificial lighting
Extra carbon dioxide
