Biofilms I - Caries Flashcards
1
Q
What is needed for caries?
A
Time
Substrate
Tooth surface
Microbiota
2
Q
How does caries progress?
A
Bacteria adhere to the tooth surface
This bacteria grows and eventually forms a biofilm
The biofilm becomes complex plaque
The pH lowers and eventually becomes caries
3
Q
What microorganism is most associated with caries?
A
S. mutans
However, caries does not equal strep mutans
4
Q
Give examples of cariogenic foods?
A
Cooked starches - crisps, biscuits
Fermentable carbohydrates
Starches can be as bad or worse than chocolate
5
Q
Give examples of other microorganisms associated with caries.
A
Veillonella
Actinomyces
