Bioenergetics Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the Chloroplasts
What are chlorophyll?
Pigments in chlorophyll
Why is Photosynthesis endothermic?
Photosynthesis takes in energy from the environment
What is the function of chlorophyll?
To absorb light
What are 3 uses of Glucose?
‐ Respiration
- Creation of Cellulose
- Creation of amino acids
How can Glucose be stored?
- as Starch
- as Lipids (Fats and Oils)
How is Glucose used in Respiration
Energy is released from the breakdown of Glucose
How is Glucose used for the creation of Cellulose?
Glucose is converted into Cellulose which makes strong cell walls
How is Glucose used for the creation of amino acids?
Glucose is combined with nitrate ions to produce amino acids
Why is Glucose stored as starch?
For long term storage
Why is Starch a good form of storage?
- Starch is insoluble, making it a more efficient form of storage than glucose
What are 4 limiting factors rhat affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Light intensity
- Carbon Dioxide Concentration
- Amount of Chlorophyll in the leaf
- Temperature
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Increasing light intensity, increases the rate of photosynthesis because the plant has more energy to carry out photosynthesis
How does the amount of chlorophyll affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Leaves trap less light energy, meaning less energy is absorbed by the chlorophyll, lowering the rate of photosynthesis
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Raising temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis as the enzymes work faster.
- Very high temperatures can cause an enzyme to denature and stop working, decreasing the rate of photosynthesis
How does Carbon Dioxide concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- When the concentration of carbon dioxide is increased, the rate of photosynthesis increases
Why do farmers increase the rate of reaction?
It increases the yield of crops they produce
How do Farmers exploit the limiting factors?
Farmers light and heat greenhouses and add extra carbon Dioxide
What do oil burners do?
They release heat and Carbon Dioxide at the same time
