Bioenergetics Flashcards
What are the limiting factors for photosynthesis?
Temperature
Carbon dioxide concentration
Light intensity
Chlorophyll concentration
(RP) Investigating the effect of a factor on the rate of photosynthesis.
1) Place a piece of pondweed in a beaker and shine a light at it using a lamp a specific distance away.
2) Record the number of bubbles of gas coming out of the pondweed in 1 minute.
3) Repeat this with the lamp at different distances from the pond weed.
What is the inverse square law?
When light intensity is studied, doubling the distance between the lamp and the pondweed will reduce the light intensity by a quarter.
What other products can glucose be made into?
-Insoluble starch which is stored in the stem, root or leaves.
- Fat or oil which is also stored in seeds.
-cellulose to strengthen the cell walls.
-Proteins which are used for growth and for enzymes.
What kind of reaction is respiration?
Exothermic.
Why do organisms need energy?
-For chemical reactions to build larger molecules.
-for movement.
-to keep warm.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen = Carbon dioxide + Water
What is produced in anaerobic respiration in animals and plants?
Animals= glucose = lactic acid.
Plants= glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide.
What is metabolism?
It is the sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell or in the body. These reactions are controlled by enzymes and may need energy transfer. This is transferred by respiration and used to make new molecules.
This includes:
-The conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose.
-The formation of lipid molecules.
-The use of glucose and nitrate ions to form amino acids.
-The breakdown of excess proteins into urea for excretion.
