biodiversity within a community Flashcards
habitat
the place where an organism normally lives, characterised by the physical conditions and types of other organisms present
ecosysytem
all the living and non living components of a particular area
population
all of the organisms of one species in an area/ habitat/ ecosystem at one time
community
all the populations of different species form a community in an area/ habitat/ ecosystem at one time
What does species richness measure
measure of the number of different species in a a community
species richness limitations
does not measure the number of individuals of each species
two communities may have the same species richness but one may be dominated by one species
why is the index of diversity a better measure of biodiversity
it takes into account the number of species present, as well as the abundance of each species
why is it better to calculate an index of diversity rather than describing the species richness
species richness does not give indication of size of each population
