Biodiversity & Conservation Flashcards
What are three types of biodiversity?
Three types of biodiversity are genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity.
Why is biodiversity important?
It contributes to the health of the biosphere and the stability of the ecosystem.
What are the direct and indirect values of biodiversity?
Direct values would be hunting plants and animals for food, clothing, energy, and medicine.
Indirect values would be clean air and water.
What are the threats to biodiversity?
Threats to biodiversity are less natural resources from exploitation, pollution, fragmentation of habitats, destruction of habitats.
How is the current extinction rate different from the background extinction rate?
Current extinction rate is due to homo sapiens. They change the conditions of the earth faster than it evolves. Background extinction is a gradual process of extinction.
How can the decline of a single species affect an entire ecosystem?
Smaller parcels of land to support fewer species and decreases genetic diversity,
What are the two classes of natural resources?
Renewable and nonrenewable resources
What are the methods used to conserve biodiversity?
Practicing sustainable use and putting corridors between habitat fragments.
What are two techniques used to restore biodiversity?
Bioremediation and Biological Augmentation
