Q

What is Eutrophication?

A

Conditions that promote algal bloom reducing light penetration and oxygen production in larger bodies. In smaller bodies, it can add nutrients.

Q

What is a Realised Niche?

A

The actual niche that a species occupies given the restrictions placed on it by the interactions with other species.

Q

What is Resource Partitioning?

A

a method used by organisms that is the creative use of space and time that reduces competition between species and allows many unique ecological niches to exist in the same area.

Q

What is Molecular Homology?

A

Organisms that have come from a common ancestor will share similar biomolecular elements – generally in the form of genetic material.

Q

What is Protein Conservation?

A

Conserved proteins undergo fewer amino acid replacements, or are more likely to substitute amino acids with similar biochemical properties. Within a sequence, amino acids that are important for folding, structural stability, or that form a binding site may be more highly conserved.

16
Q

What is a Plesiomorphic organism?

A

An organism that shares traits with its common ancestor.

17
Q

What is an Apomorphic organism?

A

An organism that does not share a trait with it’s common ancestor.

18
Q

What is the Phylogenetic species concept?

A

Identifies species as being the smallest clade or group of organisms who can all trace their origins to a single common ancestor.

19
Q

What is the Morphological species concept?

A

Characterises species by its physical characteristics (morphology).
Most commonly applied concept when examining fossils.

20
Q

What is Symbiosis?

A

Symbiosis is the general term used to describe the relationship in which at least one species benefits from the interaction. There are three main types:

parasitism: one species benefits at the expense of the other.
commensalism: one species benefits and the other is neither benefited or harmed.
mutualism: both species benefit from the interaction.
