Biodiversity, Classification and Ecology Flashcards
How are aquatic habitats classified?
Depth, distance from the shoreline, running and still water
What is Eutrophication?
Conditions that promote algal bloom reducing light penetration and oxygen production in larger bodies. In smaller bodies, it can add nutrients.
What is an Ecological Niche?
The role and space that an organism fills within an ecosystem, including all the biotic and abiotic factors that it affects.
What is a Fundamental Niche?
The widest potential niche that a species could ideally occupy without parasites or predators
What is a Realised Niche?
The actual niche that a species occupies given the restrictions placed on it by the interactions with other species.
What is Resource Partitioning?
a method used by organisms that is the creative use of space and time that reduces competition between species and allows many unique ecological niches to exist in the same area.
What is Carrying Capacity?
The number of organisms an ecosystem can provide for.
More than 0.05
Isn’t significantly different
Less than 0.05
Is significantly different
What is an R squared value?
The correlation between two variables
What is a Temporal Scale?
The amount of time an ecosystem is studied for
What is a Spatial Scale?
A scale of how large different ecosystems are. Macro (largest) Meso (middle) Micro (smallest)
What is Predation?
The preying on one animal by another.
What is Molecular Homology?
Organisms that have come from a common ancestor will share similar biomolecular elements – generally in the form of genetic material.
What is Protein Conservation?
Conserved proteins undergo fewer amino acid replacements, or are more likely to substitute amino acids with similar biochemical properties. Within a sequence, amino acids that are important for folding, structural stability, or that form a binding site may be more highly conserved.
