Biodiversity and Conservation Flashcards
What are three types of biodiversity?
Ecosystem, Genetic, and Species
Why is biodiversity important?
It makes the planet more resistant to catastrophes.
What are the direct and indirect values of biodiversity?
The direct values is that it helps our health and gives us economic gain. Indirect is that it helps sustain the planet.
What are the threats to biodiversity?
Habitat loss, Fragmentation of habitat, Overexploitation, pollution, and introduced species.
How is the current extinction rate different from the background extinction rate?
The current extinction rate is much higher.
How can the decline of a single species affect an entire ecosystem?
It can create a cascade effect killing the ecosystem.
What are the two classes of natural resources?
Renewable and nonrenewable.
What are the methods used to conserve biodiversity?
Biodiversity hot spots and corridors.
What are two techniques used to restore biodiversity?
Bioremediation and Biological Augmentation.
