Biodiversity and Classification Flashcards
BIodiversity is important because…
Anthropogenic: related to actual human use (economically useful)
Intrinsic: Related to human emotion (what emotions cause us to preserve environment? Guilt, animal rights. etc)
classification
act of grouping information or objects based on similarities.
taxonomy
is the SCIENCE of grouping and naming organisms
Linnaeus
first started classifying things. He called the groups genera and grouped genera into kingdoms. Categories are called taxa.
Taxonomy system
(Do) Kids prefer cheese over fried green spinach?
Binomial Nomenclature
genus name is capitalized and species name is in italics (or underlined if handwritten) Ex. Felis concolor
Natural Selection
Put very simply, he proposed that organisms produce excess offspring which then compete for resources. The offspring with the best inherited adaptations survive to reproduce, and so populations gradually change to suit their environments.
If two sub-populations are exposed to different environments, they will gradually come to differ from each other. Given long enough, in a variable environment, ancestral populations will give rise to two (or more) quite different descendant populations.
Cladograms
Ancestor- where tree beings.
Point where two lines meet- speciation event
line before speciation event: ancestral lineage
clade includes ancestor and ALL descendants
