8
Q

Why may genetic biodiversity increase?

A

Mutations in an organisms DNA, creating a new allele.

Interbreeding between different populations of the same species. Widening the gene pool.

Q

Why might genetic biodiversity decrease?

A

Selective breeding eg. Pedigree of dog or yield of crops

Captive breeding eg. In zoos and conservation centres

Q

How do we measure genetic biodiversity?

A

Looking at observable features of the individuals

Measuring proportion of heterozygotes

Measuring the % of polymorphic gene loci in the genome of the population

Samples organisms that are conveniently available

Q

What is systematic sampling?

A

Different areas within a habitat are sampled separately often using a transect line or belt transect

15
Q

What is stratified sampling?

A

The population is divided into groups called strata.

Samples are then taken from each group.

16
Q

What is a xerophyte?

A

A plant species adapted to environments with low amounts of water

17
Q

What is a keystone species?

A

A species which many others depend on

Without them the ecosystem would change drastically

18
Q

What factors affect biodiversity?

A

Deforestation
Agriculture
Climate change

19
Q

How do we know two organisms belong to the same species?

A

If two organisms belong to the same species they are able to interbreed and produce a fertile offspring

20
Q

Why is genetic biodiversity a good thing?

A

The better the genetic biodiversity the more likely a species is able to adapt to changes in the environment

21
Q

Define conservation?

A

The preservation and careful management of the environment and of natural resources

22
Q

What is good about conservation?

A

By conserving a natural habitat an organisms chance of survival are maintained so they can reproduce

23
Q

What is interdependence?

A

When species rely on one another for their own survival

Removal of one species may have significant affects on other species

24
Q

What makes beavers a keystone species?

A

This allows an abundance of life in their sheltered habitat

Their dams hold silt back, improving water quality, soil erosion is also prevented & flooding is downstream is reduced.

Beavers are vegan so birds, fish and amphibians all thrive.
