Biodiversity Flashcards
What is it?
all the different kinds of life you will find in ONE area. It is all the organisms including the microorganisms that make up our natural world.
3 types of biodiversity
- Genetic Biodiversity
- Species Diversity
- Ecosystem Diversity
What is genetic diversity?
the variety of genes and genetic material seen within a species.
Species Diversity
the variety of species within a habitat or a region. Rainforests and coral reefs have a large range of species living within them
Ecosystem Diversity
the variety of ecosystems within a given area
What does HIPPO stand for?
H - Habitat Loss
I - Invasive species
P - Pollution
P - Population of Humans
O - Overexploitation
What does H stand for?
The use of mining, agriculture, and deforestation that strip natural habitats of their nature needed for them to survive
What does I stand for?
other animals being introduced in a area they aren’t native to causing disruptions, spread of diseases that threats biodiversity.
What does P (pollution) stand for?
The excess of nutrients in the form of pollution leads to a decline in animal population leading to less biodiversity
What does P(population) stand for?
the increase in numbers of humans contribute to a greater demand for resources that deplete ecosystems such as climate change, population growth, and waste.
