Biodiversity Flashcards
Define Biodiversity
Diversity of species & ecosystems
What is used to determine the diversity of species in an ecosystem
Different measures are used such as species richness, relative species abundance, percentage cover, percentage frequency, SDI
Describe Species Richness
Species Richness is the number of species in an ecosystem. A pro can be easily counting from spread
Describe Relative Species Abundance
Relative species abundance is how many of each species are present. A pro can be easily see ecosystem with dominant species however, a can may be how it would be difficult to count
Describe Percentage cover
Percentage cover is the percentage of quadrat a species is occupying. A pro is that this measure is good for grasses and plants.
Describe Percentage frequency
proportion of quadrats that contained a particular species. A con for this measure is clumping - the probability a species will be found in a single quadrat
Describe SDI
Accounts for both species richness and relative species abundance
What are abiotic factors and give examples
Abiotic factors are the non-living components of an ecosystem. These include; temperature, light intensity, rainfall, water, texture and pH of soil/water
What are biotic factors and give examples
Biotic factors are the living components of an ecosystem and their activities. These include; producers, consumers and decomposers such as animals, humans and plants.
Define species
Species are a group of organisms that share gene pool
Define ecosystem
Ecosystem are different species working together
