Biodegradable polymers + Elastomers Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the factors of Bio-batch additives (Bio Batch)

A

(Front picture looks like a weed leaf)
Uses:
- Can be used for, carrier bags, plastic bottles and detergent.
Factors:
> Not a plastic it is added.
> Just 1% added will render majority of polymers 100% biodegradable
> Degrades within 1-5 year.
>Relatively expensive
> Can only be added to Thermo Plastics
> Not much use for products to degrade
> Can be used for, carrier bags, plastic bottles and detergent.

Q

Describe the factors of Biopol or PLA (Polyactide)

A
Uses:
- Medical implants
- Screws, pins, plates etc.
Factors:
> Often use in place of ABS
> Breaks down in 6 months
> Can be soft like LDPE
> Cellulose based (most organic polymer on Earth)
> Degrades within 6 months
Injection moulding or Calendared

A
Uses:
- Ergonomic overmoulded on handles
- Toothbrush handles
- Product Grips
- Electric drills
Factors:
> Squashed down
> Flexible
> Generic properties
> Overmoulding products
> Linked to themselves
> THERMO PLASTIC
