Biocides Flashcards
Biocides mode of action
Multiple target sites; non-specific at high concentrations
increases permeability of outer membrane
Increases permeability, membrane potential and enzymic activity of cytoplasmic membrane.
Causes general coagulation of cytoplasmic constituents
Triclosan
Blocks action of bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase
Widespread use
tentative evidence that resistance may be transferable
Summary:
Biocide use is widespread
To date, little evidence of development of resistance during appropriate use of biocides.
Cross-resistance with antibiotics? Possible to demonstrate in the laboratory but, in reality, little compelling evidence thus far
Effect of residual levels not fully investigated
