Biochemistry of Neoplasia Flashcards
why would PSA marker levels be raised?
prostate cancer or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)
raised CK & AST shows..
damage to muscle tissue
raised ALT/AST/ Alk Phos/GGT shows…
damage in liver
raised troponin, CK, AST, LDH shows…
cardiac damage or risk of CVD
AST/LDH shows…
haematological damage
amylase/lipase shows…
pancreatic damage (usually pancreatitis)
alk phos may show liver damage or…
bone damage
what combination of 2 markers indicated liver cancer?
GGT & Alk Phos
what are 2 mechanisms of fluid accumulation?
Ascites & Pleural Effusion
what is a biochemistry indicator of ascites due to portal HT?
a wide serum-ascites gradient
what 2 things tend to cause an exudative pleural effusion (ie. high protein content)?
inflammation (inflammatory cells shed protein) or malignant cause
systemic cause point to a ____ pleural effusion
transudative (less protein)
what is the normal Ca range?
2.10-2.55
what does Parathyroid hormone (PTH) do?
controls levels of Ca in blood by releasing Ca via bone reabsorption fundamentally inc Ca
so if PTH is high and Ca is high what does this suggest?
this is not a normal reaction as Ca is high so would expect PTH to be low so PTH is faulty
