Biochemistry - Introduction to cell biology Flashcards
What are the 4 types of phospholipids?
Phosphatidylcholine with functional group = CH2CH2C+(NH3)3
Phosphatidylethanolamine with functional group = CH2CH2NH3
Phosphatidylserine with functional group = CH(COO-)NH3+
Phosphatidylinistol with functional group = cyclic sugar ring
What do phospholipids do in aqueous solution?
Phospholipids spontaneously form micelles (globules) in aqueous solution
Fatty acid component in the middle phosphate component outer surface
Phospholipids can form a Bilayered sheet (found on cell membranes)
What are prokaryotes?
Single celled organisms, devoid of a nucleus or any membrane bound organelles (Bacteria)
Increase in Bacteria leads to Caries/Periodontal disease
In prokaryotes Transcription + Translation occur simultaneously
Has no membrane bond nucleus s tRNA + mRNA is free to move about
