Biochemistry Flashcards
Compound
2 or more atoms of different elements put together
Molecule
2 or more atoms bonded together
Ion
Charged atom
Ionic bond
Transfer of electron(s) from one atom to another, resulting in an attraction between 2 oppositely charged atoms
Breaking an ionic bond
Dissociation (like dissolving salt)
Covalent bond
Atoms sharing electrons
Element
Simplest form of a substance, a pure substance, ex: gold or carbon
Is co2 a molecule or compound
Both
Describe the pH scale
(0-14)7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic, above 7 is basic
What are buffers
Substances that maintain pH, they keep the levels consistent to ensure pH levels stay at their ideal range for enzymes in you’re body to work at full capacity
Condensation (dehydration synthesis)
Reaction where monomers are bonded together as a water molecule is removed, making a polymer
Hydrolysis
Reaction where polymers are broken into monomers by adding water molecules
What does an atom consist of
It consists of a nucleus of protons and neutrons with an electron cloud around it
What is Bromelain
An enzyme used in fresh pineapple that breaks down collagen
Enzyme
Substance made of protein that lowers the activation energy of a chemical reaction, speeding up the rate of chemical reaction
