Biochemistry Flashcards
Unit 1 Vocabulary
Covalent Bond
Formed when electrons share valence electrons
Hydrogen Bond
When two polar molecules with opposite charges get close, they form a weak electrostatic attraction
Monomer
Carbon atoms joined with other atoms
Adhesion
describes waters tendency to form hydrogen bond with things other than water
Cohesion
Properties that describe the strong attraction between the same molecules
Polymer
macro molecules made of repeating units of identical or nearly identical monomers linked together by covalent bonds
Lipid
hydrophobic organic molecules with diverse chemical structures made mostly of carbon and oxygen
Protein
Biological macromolecule made of carbon monomers called amino acids
Nucleic Acid
Complex macromolecules that store and communicate genetic information
Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy needed for reactants to form products in a chemical reaction
Catalyst
A substance that lowers the activation energy needed to start a chemical reaction
Enzyme
Proteins that are biological catalysts
