Biochemical Tests Flashcards
1
Q
What is the test for reducing Sugars?
A
Benedicts test
2
Q
Most sugars are known as reducing sugars and will give a positive result with the Benedict’s test. Which sugar is not a reducing Sugar?
A
Sucrose
3
Q
How do you perform the food test for reducing sugars?
A
- Add 1 cm^3 of the test solution to a test tube
- Add 1cm^3 of benedict’s solution
- Heat >= 60 C using a water bath
- look for red/brown precipitate
reducing sugars react with copper sulphate
4
Q
What is a qualitative test?
A
Shows whether a particular substance is present (or not) but does not give an indication of now much is present
5
Q
Why is Benedict’s a semi quantitative test?
A
The colour of the precipitate gives an idea about the quantity of sugar present in the solution
