BIO120 #2 (7-12) Flashcards
1
Q
Population
A
- Group of individuals of the same species and live in the same area at the same time.
2
Q
Migration
A
- The movement of individuals between pop’ns.
3
Q
Gene flow
A
- The movement of genes between pop’ns
- Most gene flow is local (short distances).
4
Q
Effects of natural selection on population divergence
A
- Selection increases population divergence (between pop’ns) as different pop’ns acquire unique mutations and experience different environmental pressures.
- Evolve separately
5
Q
Effect of genetic drift on population divergence
A
- Genetic drift increases population divergence as there are different random events that affect the two populations.
6
Q
Effects of gene flow on population divergence
A
- Gene flow decreases population divergence as advantageous traits between pop’ns are shared making the populations more similar.
- Low gene flow can still maintain differences (unique mutations).
- High gene flow: more similar and less diversity.
