Bio Quiz 10-19-14 Flashcards
The structure found within the dense area it produces the RNA and proteins that are used to make ribosomes it is found in this location because the process involves using DNA which is stored inside of the nucleus
Nucleolus
Stores hereditary information in the DNA molecule
Nucleus
Transfers energy from organic compounds to ATP they also have an inner and outer membrane the inner folds or Chris stay contain enzymes needed for chemical reactions they can divide to reproduce because they have their own DNA
Mitochondria
Are responsible for building protein these organelles do not have a membrane they can be freely floating in the Lytosol or attached to the rough ER
Ribosomes
A network of tubes that transports molecules through the cell. It produces phospholipids and proteins for export from the cell
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
A network of tubes that does not contain ribosomes it has different functions in different cell types it produce steroids such as estrogen and testosterone
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
A system of flattened sacks that receives spherical best vesicles from the rough ER it produces vesicles containing lipids or proteins that have been modified for export with an address label it then packages them into new vesicles to travel to other cell parts
Golgi apparatus
A small spherical shape sack surrounded by a single membrane they contain carbohydrates lipid or protein monomers and polymers they transport these things within and between cells by fusing with the cell membrane
Vesicles
Vesicles produced by the golgi apparatus that contain digestive enzymes they break down large polymers and old cell parts. In the liver they convert glycogen to glucose white blood cells can break down bacteria that invade the cell
Lysosomes
Vesicles produced by the rough ER that contain other type of enzymes they detoxify alcohol and other drugs in the liver and kill bacteria. They break down fatty acids to be used for energy. They also neutralize free radicals or oxygen ions that damage cells. They produce hydrogen peroxide to walk hearing out these reactions
Peroxisomes
Part of the cytoskeleton composed of hollow protein they form fibers for cell division hold organelles in place and helps the cell to keep its shape
Microtubules
Part of the cytoskeleton composed of long threads. they contribute to cell division and cause muscle cells to contract
Microfilaments
Many tiny hairlike structures on the outside of cells that aid in movement or trapping particles into the cell they are made of microtubules
Cilia
One or a few long tails on the outside of the cell that are used for motion they are made of microtubules
Flagella
Short cylinders composed of microtubules that assemble before cell division they form this spidle threads that guides chromosomes
Centrioles
