bio psych Flashcards
two roles of nervous system
to collect prices and respond to information in the environment
to coordinate the working of the different organs and cells in the body
what two sub systems is the nervous system divided into
central nervous system CNS
peripheral nervou sytem PNS
what is the cns made up of
the spinal cord and the brain
what is the brains outer layer
cerebal cortex
what is the cerebal cortex
distinguishes our higher mental thinking from those of animals , highly developed
what is the spinal cord responsible for
reflex actions
what does the cns do
passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerve to the pns
what does the pns do
transmits message via millions of neutrons to and from the cns
what are the two sub divisions of the pns
autonomic nervous system ANS
somatic nervous system SNS
what does the ans do
governs vital functions in the body such as breathing heart rate digestion
what does the sns do
controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
the endocrine system is ….
slower than the nervous system but has very widespread and powerful effects
hormones are ….
secreted into the bloodstream and affect any cell in the body with a receptor for that hormone
the thyroid gland produces what hormone ?
thyroxine
what effect does thyroxine have on the body ?
affects cells in the heart , increasing heart rate , it all affects other cells throughout the body increasing metabolic rates . in turn this affects growth rates .
