BIO- Nutrients & Digestion Flashcards
What is in carbohydrates that is important
Glucose, which is used to create energy for the body
Why do we need PROTEIN (2 reasons)
GROWTH and REPAIR of muscle and tissue cells
What is Vitamin A, C and D, AND where can they be found
A, maintains retina in the eye- carrots/ seeds
C, creates connective tissues- citrus fruits/ vegetables
D, Helps bones absorb calcium- sunlight
What do lipids do
Is a piece of how cell membranes are created
what is the purpose of fibre
cleanses the body and helps with digestion
What happens if there is too little fibre in a diet
constipation
what would a manual labourer need more of in their diet than an office worker
More Carbohydrates- for more energy
what does calcium do
strengthens teeth and bones
what does Iron do
Makes HAEMOGLOBIN, helps red blood cells carry oxygen
which nutrients are already small enough to be absorbed without digestion?
minerals
vitamins
water
in what order is food passed through
mouth→ oesophagus→ stomach→ small intestine→
large intestine→ anus
what do we need from protein
amino acids and nutrient
what do we need from lipids
fats and glycogen
how to do test for protein
Biurets test
add sample into a test tube, (if it is solid add water) add an equal volume of potassium hydroxide and copper sulfate and then stir for 2 minutes
Colour should turn purple
how to test for lipids
emulsion test
place sample into test tube,
- add ethanol to sample, cover the end and shake vigorously
- allow contents to settle
- pour liquid into another test tube half-filled with water
if water turns cloudy lipids are present
