Q

Diplopoda

A

-diplopodans (the millipedes) are defined by presence of diplosegments (which are formed by the fusion of pairs of body segments into one so that each “segment” has two pairs of legs)

Hexapoda # 1

A

(Insects)- consists of order odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), order orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets), order hemiptera (true bugs), order diptera (flies), order hymenoptera (bees, ants, wasps), order coleoptera (beetles), order lepidoptera (moths and beetles), etc.

Q

Hexapoda # 2

A
  • most successful group of animals on face of the earth
  • compared to insects, the vertebrates pale to insignificance not only in the number of species, but also in total weight and diversity of habits they occupy.
  • derived characters that unite all hexapods- loss of all abdominal appendages, a distinct three segmented thorax (adult insects always have 3 pairs of legs on the thorax), and the fusion of the 2nd maxillae ( a pair of mouth parts) into a labium

Q

Thorax

A
  • one body section of hexapods (middle of head and abdomen)

- adult insects always have three pairs of legs on the thorax (insect wings are also attached to the thorax)

Diplosegments

A
  • present in diplopodans (the milipedes)

Q

Differences between centipedes and milipedes

A
  • diplopods have diplosegments (2 segments fused together)
  • they also have 2 pairs legs and 2 spiracles
  • diplopods are herbivores and have armored tanks
  • chilopodans have 1 pair legs per segment
  • they are predators
  • have venomous fangs
  • last pair legs- pincers

Q

The two types of metamorphosis

A
  • Complete metamorphosis: a monophyletic group of insects that includes beetles, flies, wasps, and butterflies, that have a type of development in which a dramatic series of metamorphoses occur.
  • Incomplete metamorphosis: in insects with incomplete metamorphosis such as cockroaches and grasshoppers, the young resemble adults except they have no wings and sex organs till they reach the final, adult stage. They often compete with adults.

Q

How are insects beneficial to humans?

A
Some (especially leaf cutter ants) feed on dead flora and fauna and then recycle nutrients through the habitat- helps keep soil healthy and rich.
(Link in food web)
- pollinators
-food for us
- products: honey, wax, silk
-Forsenics

Q

How are insects detrimental to humans?

A
  • Eat a lot of vegetation (so less for humans to eat)

- pesticides to kill them ($$) and harm the environment

17
Q

How the compound eye functions

A
  • made up of ommatidia (visual receptors)
  • Each ommatidia (contributes info to a small field of view)
  • Creates mosaic image
  • insect can have 1000’s of ommatidia
18
Q

Respiration

A

-spiracles (openings in the body) are connected to the trachae in insects

19
Q

Sexual dimorphism

A

They are sexually dimorphic
