Bio Lab Mid Term 1 Flashcards
Qualitative versus quantitative
Qualitative is physical observation and description.
Quantitative is numerical description
Description
Recording of observation
Observation
Using our five senses to take in info
Metric system
International system of measurement based on the meter
Habitat
A place where an organism is normally encountered
Niche
The role in organism plays in the ecosystem
Omnivore
Eat plants and meat
Herbivore
Eats mostly plants
Carnivore
Eats meat only
Bioaccumulation
Increase of concentration of a chemical in an organism overtime
Hydrophilic
Water loving
Hydrophobic
Water fearing
Solvent versus solute
Solvent is doing the dissolving, salute is being dissolved
Adhesion
Liquid to solid
Cohesion
Liquid to itself
Capillarity
The tendency of fluid to rise up a tube due to adhesion and cohesion
Primary consumer
Herbivore
Secondary consumer
Carnivore
Tertiary consumer
Omnivore
Bioaccumulation verse biomagnification
Bioaccumulation is the buildup of absorbed chemicals in an organism over time. Biomagnification is the increase in concentration of these chemicals in each organism up the food chain.
