Bio Lab Exam 1 Flashcards
Qualitative assay
Data that is collected is not measurable and identified through observation using human senses.
Quantitative assay
Data that is collected are measurable and are identified with values or numbers.
Positive Control
Indicates that the assay is functioning as it should and gives expected results.
Negative Control
The assay is exposed to a substance that is known to have no effect.
The Purpose of test tube 3
No color change. Indicates that sucrose is not a reducing sugar and not detectable with Benedict’s reagent.
How does the test for lipids, Sudan III differ from other tests in exercise
Sudan III is a dye that binds to lipids. The assay will not result in a color change. The detection of fats is determined by the separation of layers.
Absorbance Maximum
The wavelength of light in the absorbance spectrum of a particular molecule at which maximum absorption occurs
Standard curve
Graph of known characteristics of an object that can be used to determine an unknown. Determine the concentration of substances.
Why did we set the absorbance value to 595 nm?
Absorbance maximum of Coomassie dye when bound to proteins.
Controlled Variable
Variables that are kept constant during the experiment.
Hypothesis
Tentative explain for an observation.
Indepedent Varibale
what the investigator varies in the experiment (time, pH, temp, concentration).
Procedure
The process used to measure the dependent variable.
Level of treatment
The appropriate values to use for the independent variable.
Control treatment
The treatment that eliminates the independent variable and sets it at a standard value.
