Bio Definitions Flashcards
Zygote
eukaryotic (nuclues within membrane) cell formed by a fertilization event between two gametes
Shoot Apical Meristem (SAM) or Apex
population of cells located at the tip of the shoot axis. It produces lateral organs, stem tissues and regenerates itself.
Internode
portion of a plant stem between nodes
NADP
a cofactor used in anabolic reactions, such as the Calvin cycle and lipid and nucleic acid syntheses, as a reducing agent.
Mesophyll
the inner tissue (parenchyma) of a leaf, containing many chloroplasts
Membrane
mixture of lipids/proteins
phospholipids
component of cell membrane. They can form lipid bilayers because of their amphiphilic characteristic
Xylem
transport water (+nutrients)from roots to stems and leaves
Phloem
transports the soluble organic compounds made during photosynthesis to parts of plant (partic. sugars)
Development cycle of plant
Zygote embryo –seed juvenile adult flower zygote
Monocarpic (cycle)
plants die at end of developmental cycle
Polycarpic (cycle)
Plant starts new cycle at end of developmental cycle
