Bio Cho 8 Flashcards
Cellular respiration
The catabolic pathway in which organic molecules are broken down to release energy for use by organic molecules producing water and Carbon dioxide
Photosynthesis
The anabolic pathway in which light and energy from the sun is converted chemical energy for cell use
Adenosine triphosphate
Energy storing molecule in cells composed of adensosine a ribose sugar and three phosphate groups. Energy is stored in the chemical bonds
ATP function
Releases energy when the bond between the second and third phosphate groups is broken forming adenosine diphosphate
Thylakoids
Flattened sack like membranes that are arranged in stacks
Grana
Thylakoids formed stacks
Stroma
The fluid filled space that is outside the grana
Pigments
Light absorbing molecules (chlorophyll)
Electron transport
Series if proteins embedded in a membrane along which energized electrons are transported as electrons are passed energy is released
Glycolysis
Series of anaerobic chemical reactions in the cytoplasm that break down glucose into pyruvic acid forms a net profit of 2 ATP
Kerbs cycle
In cellular respiration series of reactions that break down glucose and produce ATP ;energizes electron carriers that pass energized electrons to the electron transport chain
Light dependent
Phase of photosynthesis where light energy is converted to chemical energy in the form of ATP results in the splitting of water and the release of oxygen.
Alchoholic fermentation
Anaerobic process where cells convert pyruvic acid into carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol carried out by many bacteria and fungi such as yeast
Light Independent
Phase of photosynthesis where energy from light dependent reactions is used to produce glucose and additional ATP molecules
Calvin cycle
Series of reactions during the light independent phase of photosynthesis in which simple sugars are formed from carbon dioxide using ATP and hydrogen from the light dependent reactions
