Bio Chem Flashcards
A molecule
A substance with two or more atoms bonded together (CI2).
A compound
A substance consisting of two or more elements in a fixed ratio (NaCI). A compound has emergent properties and characteristics different from those of its elements
Energy
Energy is the capacity to cause change.
Potential energy
The energy that matter has because of its location or structure.
Energy levels
An electrons state of potential energy is called it’s energy levels or electron shell. The energy level of each shell increases with distance from the nucleus.
Valence electrons
Those that occupy the valence shell. The reactivity of an atom arises from the presence of one or more unpaired electrons in the valence shell. Atoms with complete valence shells are unreactive or inert
Covalent bonding
- atoms with incomplete valance shells can share or transfer electrons with certain other atoms. This results in atoms staying close together, held by attractions called chemical bonding
- it’s the sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms ( non-metals)
- tow or more atoms held together by valence bonds
Electronegativty
An atoms attractions for the electrons in a covalent bond.
The more electronegative an atom the more more strongly it pulls shared electrons towards itself
