Bio and Behavior Flashcards
What are the 3 types of neurons in the nervous system?
- Motor (efferent)
- Interneurons
- Sensory (afferent)
What are the functions of the parasympathetic nervous system?
- Rest and digest
- constricts pupils
- stimulates saliva
- constricts bronchi
- slows heartbeat
- stimulates peristalsis and secretion
- stimulates bile release
What are the functions of the sympathetic nervous system?
fight or flight, dilates pupils, inhibits saliva, relaxes bronchi, accelerates heartbeat, piloerection or sweating, inhibits peristalsis and secretion, stimulates glucose production and release, secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline, inhibits bladder contraction, stimulates orgasm
Organization of the brain
What does the hindbrain contain?
contains cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and reticular formation
Organization of the brain
What does the midbrain contain?
contains the inferior and superior colliculi
Organization of the brain
What does the forebrain contain?
contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia, liimbic system, and cerebral cortex
Parts of the Forebrain
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Basal Ganglia
Limbic System
Thalamus
relay station for sensory info
What does the hypothalamus do?
- Maintains homeostasis
- Connects w the Endocrine sys thru Hypophyseal portal sys that connects to the Anterior Pituitary
What does the basal ganglia do?
- Smooooth operator (smooth mvmts)
- Helps w good posture
What does Limbic System do?
Manages emos and memories
What 4 parts make up the Limbic System?
- Septal nuclei (looking to nut)
- Amygdala (big mad and big scurred)
- Hippocampus (#mems)
- Fornix (internal comm in limbic sys)
What 4 lobes make up the cerebral cortex?
- Frontal
- Parietal
- Occipital
- Temporal
What does the frontal cortex do?
- higher purpose( higher function)
- what do toddlers not have (impulse control)
-prepared ppl plan ahead (long term planning (prefrontal)) - motor fn (primary motor)
-speech (Broca)
What does the Parietal lobe do?
- sensations (touch, pressure, temperature, pain; somatosensory)
-body location (spatial processing, orientation, and manipulation)
