Bio 33 Liver Fatty Acid Ox. & Ketogenesis Flashcards
What are the products of Beta oxidation?
Acetyl CoA, NADH, FADH2
What does lipolysis do?
Breaks down TAGs into free fatty acids and glycerol using Hormone Sensitive Lipase (HSL).
What is the only tissue to produce ketone bodies?
The liver is the only tissue to make ketones.
When is lipolysis stimulated?
When insulin is low and epinephrine is high. But this is not a hard on or off, but actually a range of more on or off states.
In poorly regulated diabetes, what happens with lipolysis?
People with diabetes have low diabetes so HSL is excessively active. This makes all downstream reactions to be over active as well such as beta oxidation and ketogenesis.
Where does lipolysis happen?
Lipolysis breaks down TAGs so this happens in adipose tissue where TAGs are stored.
How are the FFAs transported from adipose tissue to the liver?
FFAs are mostly hydrophobic so they need to be transported by albumin to the liver.
