Bio Flashcards
Passive Transport
Movement of bio chemicals and other atomic or molecules substances across the cell membrane and does not require energy
Active Transport
Movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane from low to high concentration and requires energy
Phagocyte
Any cell that ingest and destroys foreign particles, bacteria and cell debris
Phagocytosis
Ingestion of bacteria and other material
Pinocytosis
Transport of fluid into a cell by means of local infoldings by the cell membrane
Endocytosis
Transport of solid matter or liquid into a cell
Exocytosis
Transport of material out of a cell
Contractile Vacuole
Membrane-enveloped cellular organelle, found in many microorganisms that periodically expands, filling with water then contracts to the cell exterior
Sodium potassium pump
Process of moving sodium and potassium ions across the cell membrane
Facilitated Diffusion
Process by which substances are transported across the cell membrane
Osmosis
The diffusion of fluids through membranes or porous particles
Ion channel
Pore forming membrane proteins, functions include establishing a resting membrane proteins
Diffusion
An intermingling of molecules, ions, etc. resulting from random thermal agitation
Carrier protein
Carry substances across either compartment barriers inside cells or through the cell membrane
Hypotonic
A solution of lower osmotic pressure than another solution with which is compared(opposed to hypertonic)
Hypertonic
A solution of higher osmotic pressure than another with which ins compare(opposed to hypotonic)
Isotonic
Pertaining to solutions characterized by equal osmotic pressure
Cytolysis
The dissolution or degeneration of cells
Plasmolysis
Contraction of protoplasm in a living cell when water is removed by exomosis
Concentration gradient
Dissolved substance in a solution between a region of high density and one of lower density
Vesicles
Small bladder like cavity, especially one filled with fluid
Equilibrium
State of rest or balance due to the equal action of opposing forces
Turgor Pressure
Pressure extend on a plant cell by water passing into the cell by osmosis
