Bio-30 Hormones Flashcards
Thyroxin
Gland: Thyroid
Target: Somatic Cells
Function: Body Cells-> stimulate body heat, stimulate production of ATP, use food in tissues.
Oxytocin
Gland: PPG
Target: Uterus and Mammary Gland
Function: Initiates labour and cramps. Stimulates the release of milk in mammals.
ADH
Gland: PPG
Target: Kidney
Function: Prevents water loss through kidneys. Promotes water absorption into blood.
PTH
Gland: Parathyroid
Target: Bones/teeth
Functions: Release of Ca into blood.
Insulin
Gland: Pancreas
Target: Body Cells, Liver, Muscle
Functions: Absorb glucose- stored as fat (long term) or store as glycogen (short term).
Cortisol
Gland: Adrenal Cortex
Target: Somatic cells
Functions: Suppress inflammation, stimulates breakdown of fats/proteins at injury site. Release glucose. Wake up hormone too.
Aldosterone
Gland: Adrenal Cortex
Target: kidney
Functions: Responds to low levels of Na in blood. Causes retention of Na at kidneys back into blood. Water is retained. ^BP
Adrenalin
Gland: Adrenal Medulla
Target: Somatic Cells
Functions: ^sympathetic response.
Noradrenalin
Gland: Adrenal Medulla
Target: Somatic Cells
Functions: ^Bp, focus, attention and memory.
ACTH- Adrenocorticotropic Hormone
Gland: APG
Target: Adrenal Cortex
Function/effects: Stimulates release of long term stress hormones. Release of Cortisol and aldosterone.
FSH-Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Gland: APG
Target: Ovaries and Testes
Function/effects: Females, stimulates development of an egg in an ovary. Males, stimulates development of sperm in the testes.
LH-Luteinizing Hormone
Gland: APG
Target: Ovaries and Testes
Function/ Effects: Females, stimulates ovulation and production of estrogen. Males, stimulates production of testosterone.
MSH- Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone
Gland: APG
Target: Melanocytes
Function/effects: stimulates pigment production by melanocytes of skin, hair and iris.
PRL-Prolactin
Gland: APG
Target: Mammary Glands
Function/effects: stimulates and maintains milk production in mammals.
Testosterone
Gland: Testes
Target: Body Cells
Function/effects: Responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics.
