BIO 168 - Epithelial Glands Flashcards
Endocrine glands
Effects are far-reaching through body.Hormones regulate many metabolic and physiological activities to maintain homeostasis
Exocrine glands
Effects are local. Produce substances such as sweat to help lower body temperature, oil, earwax, saliva, or digestive enzymes.
Simple Glands
Ducts do not branch
Compound Glands
Ducts that branch
Acinar Glands
Gland with rounded secretory portions
Tubular Glands
Gland with tubular secretory parts
Tubuloacinar Glands
Have both tubular and more rounded secretory parts
Merocrine Glands
Most common exocrine gland in body. Secretions synthesized on ribosomes attached to rough ER, packaged by golgi complex are released from cell via exocytosis. Examples: salivary glands and pancreas.
Apocrine Glands
Accumulate their secretory product at the apical surface of the secreting cell. Then, that portion of the cell pinches off by exocytosis from the rest of the cell to release the secretion. Example: mammory and sweat glands.
Holocrine Glands
Accumulate their secretory product in their cytosol. Cell ruptures and becomes secretory product. Example: sebaceous gland of skin.
