Bio Flashcards
What is a gene?
DNA section that encodes a single protein
What is an allele?
A gene variant that encodes the same protein but for a different trait expression. Ie all hair colours are alleles
What is genotype?
Genetic composition
What is phenotype?
Physical expressed traits based on genetic combination
Homozygous means
Two of same allele
Heterozygous means
Two different alleles
Complete dominance means
One allele completely masks the other
Incomplete dominance
When you get a blended expression of the two alleles
Co dominance
When both alleles are simultaneously expressed
What’s is autosomal expression?
When gene alleles are located on the sex chromosomes and this are gender dependent
What is hemizygous?
Only having one gene allele (male specific)
Proteins are encoded by what?
Genes
How can we predict either parentage or child phenotype
Gene alleles mapped in punnet squares or as a hypothesis test
