Binding Forces Flashcards
Two factors that usually determine the state in which matter exists
Intermolecular forces
Temperature
They are the forces between molecules which hold two or more of them together
Intermolecular forces
Forces happen inside the molecule, meaning forces within a molecule and these are the forces that hold the atoms together which form the molecule
Intramolecular forces
It is a separation of two opposing charges over a distance
Dipole
Do not have a net charge, but this charge separation can often create chargelike interactions and influence several physical and chemical properties
Dipole
Defined as the product of the distance of charge separation (d) and the charge (q)
Dipole moment
Molecules that have perfect symmetry have dipole moments of zero
Nonpolar
Molecules are asymetric and have nonzero dipole moments
Polar
Electron clouds interpenetrate (positive-positive) (neg-neg)
Intermolecular repulsive forces
Positive pole- negative pole
Molecular attraction (dipole-dipole interaction)
Identically charged poles
Repulsion
