Binary Fission Flashcards
Includes replication of viruses
1
Q
How does binary fission work?
A
- Circular DNA replicates and both copies attach to cell membrane
- Plasmids also replicate
- Cell membrane begins to grow between 2 DNA molecules and begins to pitch inwards, dividing cytoplasm into 2
- New cell wall forms between 2 DNA, dividing original cell into 2 identical daughter cells
1
Q
Where is binary fission used?
A
Prokaryotic cells
2
Q
How do viruses replicate?
A
- Attach to host cells with attachment proteins
- They then inject nuclei acid into the host cell
- Genetic material provides instructions for hosts metabolic processes
- Starts producing viral components which are then assembled into new viruses
