Billy Elliot Table Flashcards
1) “I know I shouldn’t have come” (Jackie)
Blurted
He feels bad for intruding on her evening, and he also feels angry at himself for coming. Regrets it.
Sorry for him, knows he is trying to do what’s best.
2) “Wait!” (Miss Wilkinson)
Shouted
She truly believes that Billy has potential and is feels bad for Jackie and Billy and is giving into what he wants her to say.
Makes the audience recognise that she cares for him and is desperate to give him a chance in life. They therefore feel relieved that he is getting this opportunity.
3) “Oh, it’s nothing twenty quid or something” (Mrs Wilkinson)
Gushed
Money isn’t an issue to her, and it also presents the differences between their wealth.
Audience feels awkward as they recognise the tension between the characters.
4) “5 grand! We haven’t even got enough money for a bus fare to London!” (Jackie)
Snapped
He feels ridiculed as he knows he can’t afford that much money and is mortified that she is “judging” him.
Audience has a sympathetic response towards hearing this and recognises he is struggling to admit that he isn’t in a fortunate situation.
5) “The kid is gifted, he’s got a chance, what do you got to offer him, mining?” (Mrs Wilkinson)
Cried
She cares for Billy and is doubtful about the success of the miner’s strike. She wants to convince him about what she thinks is best for him. She is intelligent and can recognise that the strike is flawed and is destined to failure.
Audience know she is right and is on her side. They already feel positively towards her and feel sympathy for her as she is struggling to get her point across.
6) “I wanna thank you for everything that you’ve done for our Billy” (Jackie)
Stated
He is embarrassed to admit he is appreciative due to his pride yet is a caring person and is doing the right thing. He is capable of apologising and therefore we recognise he is capable of change.
Optimistic response as they feel like things are ‘looking up’ and better things are ahead for Billy.
